How to save your own TikTok videos using official options

TikTok gives creators three official ways to keep their own content: save before posting, save after posting, and request a data download.

Published · By the VideoDownGo team

If you post on TikTok, you should keep your own copy of every video. This guide walks through the options built into TikTok. The steps below follow TikTok's Help Center as we read it on October 5, 2026. Menu names and positions change between app versions and regions, so if a screen looks different, search the in-app help.

Option 1: save to your device before you post

TikTok recommends downloading your videos or photos before you publish, so you have copies on your device. According to the TikTok Help Center:

  1. On the Post screen, tap More options.
  2. Turn on Save to device.

You can also tap Save in the side panel while you are editing, to download a video or photo post.

This is the best approach for quality, because it keeps the file your phone and the app produced before the platform re-compresses it for viewers. See 720p vs 1080p vs 4K for why that matters.

Option 2: save a video you already posted

For a video that is already published, TikTok describes the same steps for any video you can save:

  1. Open the video in the TikTok app.
  2. Tap Share on the side of the video.
  3. Tap Save video.

TikTok adds that if you do not see Save video, the creator does not allow it. Creators keep download options for their own content even when they disable downloads for other people: TikTok states that you will still have the download and sharing options available for your own content.

Option 3: request your data from TikTok

TikTok lets you request a copy of your account data. According to its article on requesting your data:

  1. Open your Profile, tap the menu button, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Account, then Download your data.
  3. Choose which information to include and a file format.
  4. Tap Request data.

TikTok creates a file and tells you in the app when it is ready, which it says can take a few days. When it is ready, you return to the same screen to download it, and TikTok says the file is available for a limited time (up to four days when we checked). Some data may not be available, and the most recent day or two may not be included.

TikTok's article says the data you can request may include things like your username, video history, comment history and privacy settings. What each category contains can change, so look at what your request offers and open the archive when you receive it, instead of assuming it holds every video at its original quality.

Decide who else can download your videos

You control whether other people can save your content. TikTok's article on managing video downloads explains the setting. In summary:

  • When downloads are allowed, other people can save your videos or photos to their device, turn videos into animated photos and GIFs, and share them directly to some other platforms.
  • When downloads are not allowed, they cannot do those things. They can still share your content with a link or in direct messages.
  • Turning the setting off stops downloads of what you have already posted and of your future posts. Copies saved while the setting was on stay on the other person's device.
  • If your account is private, or you are under 16, downloads are off by default and cannot be turned on.

To change it, open your Profile, tap the menu button, then Settings and privacy, Privacy, and Downloads, and switch Video downloads on or off.

Third-party tools

Anything outside these official options is separate from TikTok. VideoDownGo is an independent service and has no affiliation with TikTok. If you use any outside tool, use it only for videos you own or have permission to save, and respect a creator's choice to turn downloads off. Our TikTok page explains what the tool can and cannot do. A routine that works

  1. Turn on Save to device before every post.
  2. Every few months, request your TikTok data and check the archive.
  3. Keep copies in more than one place, as described in How to back up your own social media videos.
  4. Keep a note of the music and any people who appear in each video.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the Save video option?

TikTok says that if the option does not appear, the creator does not allow downloads. If it is your own video, check that the post is yours, and look for the save options in the editing screen or in your data download.

Do I lose my videos if TikTok removes my account?

You could. That is why a copy on your device matters more than anything stored on the platform.

Is a downloaded video the same quality as my original?

Usually not. The version on the platform is compressed. Your original file from the camera or the editing app is the best copy.
